The company was founded by Robert Mühle in 1869 and initially were toolmakers to the watch industry, in 1921 under the leadership of sons of Robert Mühle the company expanded to produce instruments and clocks for high end car company's.
In 1945 the Russian air force bombed the Glashütte factories and production ended for a short period while Hans Mühle founded a new company in December 1945 which manufactured dial trains for pressure and temperature measuring instruments.
After the fall of the Berlin wall and Germany was unified, the company started to produce marine chronometers, ship's timepieces and other nautical instruments and in 1996 production was extended to produce mechanical wristwatches which became the mainstay of the company.
The company suffered badly after the introduction of Quartz watches and was on the verge of bankruptcy until Thilo Mühle took over the company in 2007 when they developed the woodpecker regulation, Glashütte three-quarter plate and the Mühle rotor.
